We love seeing the incredible, creative concepts our customers generate using AI. Tools like Midjourney and DALL-E make it easier than ever to sketch out a unique vision. However, there is a big difference between a design that looks beautiful on a glowing smartphone screen and artwork that can be physically printed onto fabric.
When you submit a raw AI graphic for a custom t-shirt order, it usually requires some heavy lifting behind the scenes before we can run it on our presses. Here is a transparent look at why AI files cannot go straight to print, and what our "art fee" actually covers to make your shirts look amazing.
The biggest surprise for most creators is that AI image generators natively output files optimized only for screens, typically at 72 DPI (Dots Per Inch).
On a bright, compact laptop or phone screen, 72 DPI looks perfectly sharp. But garment printing requires a much denser file of at least 300 DPI at its final physical size.
If we take a standard 72 DPI digital file and stretch it across a 12-inch chest print area, those tiny digital squares expand. The result is a blurry, blocky, and highly pixelated print on your fabric. Our production team has to manually rebuild or deeply upscale the file so it stays crisp and clear when ink hits the cotton.
Digital graphics generally fall into two categories: raster and vector. AI art outputs as a raster image, meaning it is a flat grid of static colored pixels mashed together into a single layer.
T-shirt printing—especially classic screen printing—works completely differently. It requires vector graphics, which use mathematical paths to define lines and shapes.

Because AI fuses all the colors together like dried paint, our design team has to meticulously untangle and trace the artwork by hand to create clean edges that will last through the wash.
Think of an art fee not as a penalty, but as a specialized tune-up for your design. The AI tool gave us a great blueprint, but it takes a human graphic designer to actually build the finished machine.
