AI Graphics & Printing: What You Need to Know

Why isn't every graphic ready to print?

AI has made it incredibly easy to create beautiful graphics. In just a few seconds, you can describe an idea and get an impressive-looking image.

But there's an important difference between artwork that looks good on a computer screen and artwork that is ready to print on a shirt.

Think of it this way:

AI creates a picture.
We need artwork that can be printed.

Those aren't always the same thing.

What makes AI artwork difficult to print?

AI-generated images often contain elements that make them difficult and time-consuming to prepare for apparel printing.

Lots of tiny details

AI loves adding texture, shading, tiny lines, highlights, and other details. These may look fantastic on a screen but can disappear, fill in, or become difficult to see when printed on a shirt.

Too many colors

An AI image can contain dozens—or even hundreds—of slightly different shades. Those colors may need to be simplified and carefully prepared so they reproduce consistently when printed.

Fuzzy or complicated edges

AI artwork can contain shadows, glows, gradients, semi-transparent areas, and soft edges. These effects don't always translate cleanly to a printed garment.

Small imperfections

AI-generated artwork can contain subtle mistakes in letters, numbers, mascots, faces, hands, or other details. They may not be noticeable when viewing the image on a phone or computer, but they can become very obvious when the artwork is enlarged or prepared for printing.

Backgrounds aren't always truly clean

An image may appear to have a transparent background but still contain faint pixels, shadows, or a light "halo" around the artwork. These unwanted elements can show up when the design is printed.

Why can't you just print the image I sent?

We often can use an AI-generated image as a reference or starting point, but it may need to be cleaned up or recreated before it is ready for production.

Our artists may need to:

• Remove unwanted backgrounds and pixels

• Clean up edges and small details

• Simplify colors

• Recreate shapes and lettering

• Separate elements of the design

• Redraw portions of the artwork

• Convert the design into a format that can be properly sized and printed

This is much more than simply "saving the image as a different file type."

Why does this take so long?

Converting a complicated AI-generated image into clean, print-ready artwork can take our contracted artists a significant amount of time.

What may have taken AI only seconds to generate can take a skilled designer hours to carefully rebuild. Our artists often have to work through the design piece by piece to make sure the lines, shapes, colors, and details will reproduce properly on a garment.

That's why some artwork may require an additional artwork/vectorization charge.

The charge isn't for simply opening your file or changing its format. It covers the professional design time required to turn the image into usable production artwork.

What is vector artwork?

You may hear us ask for a vector file.

A simple way to think about it is:

A photograph is made of pixels.
A vector graphic is made of shapes and lines.

Because vector artwork is made from shapes and lines, it can be made larger or smaller without becoming blurry. It also gives our artists much more control over the individual elements of a design.

Common vector file types include SVG, EPS, and AI.

A high-resolution JPG or PNG may look sharp, but high resolution does not automatically mean an image is vector artwork or print-ready.
